Ball culture consists of events that mix performance, dance, lip-syncing, and modeling. Events are divided into various categories, and participants "walk" for prizes and trophies. As a countercultural phenomenon, ball culture is rooted in necessity and defiance. Although some balls were integrated, the judges were always white, and African-American participants were often excluded from prizes or judged unfairly. Ball culture then grew to include primarily gay, lesbian, bisexual, and trans Black people and Latinos.

Many of the leading white activists in the gay community were part of the black civil rights movement and often borrowed from the black freedom struggle and black power movement in creating their own campaigns for equality. Violence : Despite the theme of liberation, the s witnessed harrowing acts of violence. From the serial killer, known as the trash bag murder, who preyed on young gay men in California to the acts of arson that attacked gay churches throughout the country, violence stalked gay liberation.

In response, many Americans embraced a new conservatism in social, economic and political life during the s, characterized by the policies of President Ronald Reagan.
It used to be a tribal signal but as gay style has moved into the mainstream, the look has become harder to pin down. W hen he was studying at Central Saint Martins, London, in the late 00s, Craig Green wrote his dissertation on the adoption of gay style subcultures by straight men. In the preceding decades, perfumed dandies, dilly boys, mods, skins, clones , new romantics, scallies , fierce vogueing divas and muscle Marys had all been sieved out of their natural habitat on to the high street for brief moments of mass consumption.
