Gay and lesbian book stores

The book, then just published, was evidently meant to help normalize already boringly normal families like ours by using the traditional substitution of animals for people in order to illustrate how much fun having gay dads can be. So did the name of a town en route to the country: Peckerwood. The title characters are best friends, both male, who essentially spend their lives together. Toad, shorter and wartier, is a worrier. Frog, sleeker and greener, is an ameliorator. They wear tight pants, collarless jackets and no shirts: outfits that would surely look great on the hunky fireman.

The country's oldest gay and lesbian bookstore — The Oscar Wilde Bookshop in Manhattan — is closing its doors. There's another gay landmark leaving the scene, far from the glitz of Hollywood. It's a tiny brick storefront in Manhattan's Greenwich Village, The Oscar Wilde Bookshop, the country's oldest gay and lesbian bookstore. One of our producers, Zoe Chase, grew up in New York, and she spent many a youthful weekend there. She sends this postcard. Cecilia Martin is the manager of the Oscar Wilde Bookshop.

The independent bookstore seems to be a dying breed. That is even truer of the specialty independent: the bookstore that services a specific clientele, with curated offerings to fit the community. The places are treasure troves of rare and under-appreciated books. They are where you can find the entire breadth of gay YA, every trans autobiography, and all the lesbian graphic novels your heart desires. More than that, they stand as community pillars, providing access to the representation which we so often thirst for.
As a cultural construct, Weimar Berlin is Atlantis. It's become a fabulous tale so freighted with hype, misconception and myth that it has sunken to a point where one questions if it ever existed at all except in its renderings? Isherwood, Cabaret, Fassbinder's Berlin Alexanderplatz. Some of Weimar Berlin has come down to us more or less intact, most notably Threepenny Opera and scattered songs of its cabaret scene marvelously interpreted a few years ago by Ute Lemper and the Matrix Ensemble on their collection, Berlin Cabaret Songs. For the visuals, there's Otto Dix and George Grosz.
